Try asking yourself the following questions

1) Do you wish someone would jus say do “this” and these students will become productive

2) Are you tired of offering counseling, tutoring and a ton of other stuff and nothing seems to get these students to take school seriously

3) Do you wish these kids would start thinking about their future before it is too late

4) Are you tired of students with poor attitudes, that don’t cooperate and just don’t get it

5) Do you need students to realize that average academic performance is going to get them nowhere

6) Have you thought lately, I know my students have what it takes to make it out here, I just don’t think they know they have what it takes

7) Are you ready for students to be competitive for the next steps in their lives

8) Have you thought lately, I know they need more than the academics

Conversation with Yourself

Common sense would say if you want to learn something new all you have to do is just find the class enroll and begin to apply your knowledge to enhance your everyday life. You and I both know it is never that easy and it sometimes take years to decide what you want to learn where you want to take the class and when you will have time.You may suffer from having too many choices and not be able to make a decision for some strange reason that only you know.

You may say to yourself, I don’t have time or I won’t know anyone in the class or you may just be afraid because once you have that knowledge you may feel like your next steps are within reach. None of these are comfortable but you can say to yourself, I have not met any new people in years, this may be fun or you can acknowledge that you are afraid and take the step any way. When you talk to yourself get a mantra that is something like “I am taking action and it is for my good”

The new conversation in your head is all about possibilities of where what you are learning can offer your life. Have the necessary conversations with whoever will help you to cover all arrangements needed and just do it.

Conversation with Mentee

Learning something new is exciting and may or may not be linked to some future goal. Learning something new may also be capability based. Your mentee may have gotten feedback that she needs to be more assertive, practice public speaking, or improve time management. As mentor you can work with your mentee on any of these or work together to find a class that can meet her needs. As a way to pull through the learning, what ever it is, together the two of you can brainstorm about ways that the new skill can be practiced.
